  3. the actual manual.

  5. The development of Calamus, its graphic interface, and its related
  6. products bring you to the forefront of desktop technology. Calamus
  7. supports state of the art color technology, printers and graphic boards.
  8.  
  9. Functionality and modularity allow a step-by-step expansion of the
  10. system, customized to your needs - WYNIWYG (What You Need Is What You
  11. Get). New developments are easily integrated and guarantee compatibility.

  13. The remainder of this information highlight differences between 
  14. Calamus 1.09N and Calamus SL. You will notice many important advances.

  17. Comparing Calamus 1.09N to Calamus SL
  18.  
  19. Calamus SL is color capable. Up to 16.7 million colors can be accessed
  20. from the various color display and output options.
  21.  
  22. Screening
  23. Calamus SL uses technically correct screens that are automatically
  24. defined by the printer drivers for true WYSIWYG.
  25.  
  26. Precision
  27. The calculation precision of Calamus SL can be adjusted and is set
  28. to 1/10000 mm.
  29.  
  30. Modules
  31. Calamus SL incorporates a number of basic internal functions and standard
  32. elements and modules. Add to these an increasing number of optional
  33. modules. This concept guarantees flexibility as Calamus products continue
  34. to be developed. True WYNIWYG!

  36. Magnifying Glass
  37. The magnifying glass makes it possible to zoom in on any part of the
  38. document.

  40. Multiple Documents
  41. You are able to work on multiple documents (up to 7) at the same time and
  42. exchange data between them by using a scrolling clipboard. The number of
  43. clipboard items is limited only by available RAM.

  45. Double Pages
  46. Calamus SL has a true double-page mode. Double page documents are
  47. displayed and can be edited in the double-page mode.

  49. Floating Submenus
  50. The command areas of Calamus SL can be moved anywhere on the screen. You
  51. can also create and display multiple command areas simultaneously. Design
  52. a command area configuration for your desktop based on your own
  53. preferences.

  55. Improved File Selector
  56. The file selector box has been expanded and improved.
  57.  
  58. Editable Macro Keys with Macro Recorder
  59. A command sequence can be recorded with the help of the Macro Recorder
  60. and then assigned to a key (macro key). This allows you to configure
  61. Calamus SL to your needs. The assigned macro keys can be edited later.

  63. Virtual Memory
  64. Calamus SL contains virtual memory management that allows it to create
  65. documents that are larger than available RAM. This is achieved through the
  66. use of free space on your hard disk drive to "page" parts of your
  67. document.

  69. Master Pages
  70. Instead of the header/footer frames, Calamus SL has a fully implemented
  71. master page management system which can handle repeated elements with a
  72. great degree of flexibility. Master pages can also be saved and used in
  73. any document you wish.

  75. Improved Caching
  76. Calamus SL can cache all frame types unlike the vector-only cache in
  77. 1.09N. This dramatically speeds up screen redraw.

  80. Pulldown Menus

  82. Import Drivers
  83. Calamus SL can import more formats than 1.09N. Since all import drivers
  84. are separate modules, they can be loaded or deleted at any time. You can
  85. also save selected drivers in your setup file.

  87. Multicopy with Offset
  88. Besides the ability to select a frame copy type as Virtual or Physical,
  89. you now have the option to enter the number of desired copies as well as x
  90. and y offset from the original.

  92. Lock Document
  93. To prevent a new/different format at a different workstation or service
  94. bureau, documents can now be locked. This option also allows you to
  95. automatically remove empty pages, unused fonts, text styles and color
  96. lists from a document when you save.

  98. Expanded Setup
  99. The system default CALAMUS.SET file has been expanded. All settings of
  100. Calamus SL are saved now. Additions include the unit of measurement, text
  101. style and ruler settings. The CALAMUS.SET file contains over 200
  102. user-selected parameters.

  104. Clipboard
  105.  
  106. Clipboard functions are now more flexible. In addition to frames, you can
  107. copy vector objects, text and text rulers to the clipboard.

  109. Data Exchange between Documents
  110. Document limitations have been removed. Both text and graphics can now be
  111. copied between documents using the universal clipboard.

  113. Unlimited Entries
  114. The number of entries available on the clipboard is now limited only by
  115. the amount of available memory.

  119. Page Module
  120. The units of measurement in Calamus SL can be adjusted more precisely than
  121. before. When importing a document from Calamus 1.09N, you may adjust your
  122. work to the more precise standards of Calamus SL.

  124. Master Page Control
  125. Master pages have their own command field in the Page module.

  127. Frame Module
  128. Handling of proportional frames has been improved.
  129.  
  130. Text can now flow around any vector object. The outline of a vector
  131. graphic is considered as the flow border and not the frame itself (as is
  132. the case with bitmapped graphics).
  133.  
  134. The handling of textflow chains has been dramatically improved. You can
  135. now connect different textflow chains as well as insert one chain in
  136. another and insert frames into an existing textflow chain, before or after
  137. a selected frame.
  138.  
  139. Control Lines (Gradient Curves) for Images
  140. Since you are now able to load more than just bitmapped images (gray
  141. scale and color), you can adjust the gradient curve for any picture
  142. format. This includes the ability to control intensity, contrast and color
  143. levels.

  145. Page Parts Print Option
  146. The page part print option (known as Tiling) allows you to define an area
  147. of your document for printing. You can frame any part of a page and print
  148. it. This function is helpful if the printer cannot print the entire page.
  149. In this case, only those parts of the page enclosed by a user-definable
  150. frame will be printed. Further, the tiling frames can be configured to
  151. spread across the entire page, with definable overlaps, so that your
  152. complete work page is printed in a series of "tiles".

  154. You can also now define the vertical and horizontal overlap for each
  155. tiling frame. The size of each tiling frame may be userⁿdefined or may be
  156. automatically set to represent the maximum possible print size of the
  157. selected printer.

  159. Frames: Write Mode/Mirror/Rotate
  160. Frames can now be rotated, mirrored and named. Further, you are able to
  161. set the write mode (transparent, opaque, inverted) for every frame. The
  162. rotate function also now applies to any frame.

  164. Calamus 1.09N made it possible to name pictures. This is now possible
  165. with all frame types, thereby allowing many people to work on one
  166. document. The layout person can define which file should be imported into
  167. which frame.

  169. Magnetic Help Lines, Grids and Frames
  170. Magnetic Frames have been added to existing magnetic help lines and
  171. grids. This allows the accurate positioning directly on frame borders.

  173. Definable Origin Point for Layout Ruler and Grid
  174. The point of origin for the layout ruler and grid can be defined anywhere
  175. on the x and y axes.

  177. Improved Frame Display
  178. All frame types are now accessible and can be moved in their inactive
  179. state.

  181. Text Module
  182. Calamus 1.09N allowed you to insert time and date stamps into text via a
  183. macro. Calamus SL allows you to recalculate these values, allowing more
  184. control in your document.

  186. Spelling correction is possible with the help of the spellchecking
  187. dictionary.

  189. Keyboard Layout
  190. Variable commands and command sequences can be tied to a definable key
  191. binding. These definitions can be edited at any time.

  193. A scroll bar has been added to the character set command group.

  195. Tabulator/Indents
  196. The complete tabulator (tab) concept of Calamus 1.09N has been
  197. redesigned. Depending on the position of the tabulator in the text, the
  198. orientation is either centered, left aligned or right aligned. The mouse
  199. may be used to drag indents and tabulators.

  201. Text Functions
  202. Justified text has been improved. Space width can be assigned a minimum
  203. and maximum value.
  204.  
  205. Text macros can be assigned to any key (like the key commands). The text
  206. macro key must be pressed in conjunction with a key command, activating
  207. the text macro function.
  208.  
  209. The efficiency of the layout editor has been improved. Text corrections
  210. and changes can be handled more easily and quickly. Screen redraws are
  211. localized to the current display. No more waiting for the whole document
  212. to reformat!
  213.  
  214. Text Style Module
  215. The management of text styles has changed dramatically. You should take
  216. some time to study this part of the manual. The degree of control is now
  217. remarkable:

  219. Font calculation can be changed to values based upon em, versal, and
  220. designer height.
  221.  
  222. Predefined character heights can be edited.
  223.  
  224. The definition of kerning can be calculated differently.
  225.  
  226. Proportional Text, Esthetic Kerning, and Numbers in Block can be selected
  227. via on/off switches.
  228.  
  229. Until now, you could only affect inter-character and word spacing using
  230. the text ruler. These can now be achieved with the text style options.
  231.  
  232. Outline, underline, shadow percentage and character body can be adjusted
  233. separately. This also applies to color selection.
  234.  
  235. You are able to achieve global change in the text layout with the help of
  236. the text styles. Until now, settings for font, character size, character
  237. attributes, and character color had to be entered separately. These can
  238. now be set or changed for each text style. Text styles are kept in an
  239. editable list which can be used in any document.

  241. Raster Area Module
  242. The radius of corners of raster areas can now be changed.

  246. Text Editor Module
  247. PKS-Write is the new built-in Text Editor. It is specifically designed to
  248. maximize the functionality of Calamus.

  250. Focoltone Module
  251. Focoltone is a new color system which is based on Process Colors (CYMK)
  252. and specifies 763 spot colors. All spot colors can be reproduced with the
  253. help of the four standard colors from the most difficult pastel tone to
  254. the brightest full color.

  256. System Parameters Module
  257. Default system parameters can now be set within the System Parameters
  258. module. Parameters include the font directory tree (fast accessing of
  259. Calamus fonts), screen resolution, minimum memory requirements, screen
  260. rasterization, system memory and much more.

  262. Color/Grayscale Module
  263. The color/grayscale module allows Calamus owners with 8- or 24-bit color
  264. cards to switch to grayscale mode.

  266. Additional Information

  268. Raster Generator
  269. You now have an unprecedented degree of control over the screen raster
  270. settings. This module gives you control over the size and type of dot
  271. used, line screen angle and more.

  273. Color Separation
  274. These settings are also dependent on the printer driver and cannot be
  275. altered.
